My Serene Escape to Phu Quoc Island

My Serene Escape to Phu Quoc Island

From September 20 to 23, 2024, I embarked on a delightful trip to Phu Quoc Island, a hidden gem in Vietnam that promised both adventure and tranquility. Though the weather had its ups and downs, my experience was filled with warmth, kindness and unforgettable moments.
Arrival and First Impressions

I departed Kuala Lumpur on September 20, catching AirAsia flight AK 545, which landed at 1:35 PM. As I stepped out of the airport, my airport transfer—booked through Agoda—was waiting with a warm smile. The journey to my cozy, family-run bungalow was smooth, allowing me to soak in the lush surroundings of the island.

After a short rest, I joined a squid fishing tour in the evening. My companions were a lively group of travelers from China and Korea. We enjoyed a humble yet delicious dinner that featured barbecued flat pearl oysters and deep-sea cockles, prepared with cashews and a local Vietnamese sauce. The highlight was our freshly caught squid, served alongside porridge, barbecue prawns, Vietnamese noodles and a selection of fruits. It was a communal experience that fostered connections over shared food and laughter.

A Day of Exploration

The next day, I joined a mixed group of Europeans and Malaysians for a full-day ground tour. Our first stop was a pearl farm, where I found beautiful pearl jewelry for my mom, my daughter and her best friend. In a fun twist of fate, I even won a pearl bracelet by answering a question during the tour!

After the pearl farm, we visited the serene Ho Quoc Pagoda, a tranquil temple set against the backdrop of lush greenery. I took some time to explore the grounds, lighting incense in the temples and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was a moment of reflection that added a spiritual touch to my journey.

However, as we boarded the van to head to the Coconut Prison Museum, the skies opened up and torrential rain began to pour. We waded through puddles, laughing and splashing as we made our way to the van, only to dry off as we traveled to Sao Beach for dinner. Despite the rain obscuring the view, I decided to venture out on my own for dinner. Using Grab, I discovered local seafood restaurants and I was thrilled to find Balot—steamed duck egg with an embryo—served with lime, lemon myrtle and fresh ground chilies. I gave in to my adventurous spirit and tried it, savoring each bite.

A Day of Relaxation and Reflection

The following day brought more rain, prompting me to take it easy. I explored beauty and cosmetic stores within a 3-kilometer radius of my bungalow, had my clothes laundered and indulged in more seafood. I had brought my mini laptop along and used the time to write.

The Balot became a recurring theme of my stay. I ordered it twice more, even saving some to bring back for Ms. Erika, who had requested it. I was given an exit door seat on my flight back and I was determined to keep my handbag with me, filled with my precious Balot. I explained to the crew that it was fragile, though I couldn't help but smile at how protective I felt over my humble snack. The station manager reassured me and during disembarkation, the cabin crew even apologized for any confusion. I, in turn, expressed my gratitude for their understanding.

Fond Memories and New Friendships

During my stay at the Cosy Bungalow (a simple choice of accommodation this time and I thought that I can look forward to walks on the beach but I was warned not to due to high tide), I developed a lovely rapport with the mother-daughter team who ran the place. They were so friendly, engaging me in small talk and asking about my life. When they inquired why I was traveling solo, I shared that I was content with my independence. Their encouragement made me feel even more at home.

I was particularly impressed by their dedication to maintaining the property. I noticed that even after 10 PM, they were still out sweeping fallen leaves. This attention to detail showcased their care for the accommodation and made me appreciate my surroundings even more.

Reflecting on my travels this year through three Indo-Chinese countries, I found the Vietnamese people to be the most friendly and trustworthy. Their modesty and warmth left a lasting impression on me.

A Bittersweet Farewell

As my trip drew to a close, I realized I would miss the cable car ride I had hoped to experience—the highlight of the trip—due to the inclement weather. However, I left with a heart full of gratitude and plans for another visit, perhaps to a different island in Vietnam next year when the weather would be more favorable.

Upon returning to Kuala Lumpur, I was greeted with a lovely dinner from my daughters, Ms. Erika and her best friend Shovina. It was the perfect way to cap off my serene escape.

Conclusion

While the rain occasionally dampened my plans, it also allowed me to reflect, write and connect with the people around me. My trip to Phu Quoc Island was a beautiful blend of exploration, culinary adventures and heartwarming interactions. I came away with cherished memories and a longing to return someday soon.
