Understanding Facial Wrinkles
Facial wrinkles typically appear as a result of the natural aging process, including biochemical processes such as glycation, as well as lifestyle and environmental factors, such as a habitual sleeping position, significant weight loss or gain, sun damage and overexposure to water. In some cases, temporary wrinkles can also appear due to temporary changes to lifestyle, such as increased stress or changes in diet, as well as changes in humidity and temperature.
In addition, other factors contributing to the development of wrinkles include hormonal changes, environmental conditions, and unhealthy lifestyle such as a lack of exercise and a poor diet. Specifically, an unhealthy diet and excessive consumption of alcohol and processed food can deprive the skin of essential vitamins and minerals, leading to the development of wrinkled skin. Furthermore, a lack of exercise can also result in decreased blood circulation, leading to the accumulation of toxins in the skin, weakening the collagen and elastin fibers, and eventually promoting wrinkles.
Wrinkles can be divided into two main categories, dynamic and static.
Over time, the repeated use of facial expressions such as frowning, worrying, squinting, and smiling can result in the appearance of dynamic wrinkles on the face. These wrinkles, which are caused by the continuous movement of facial muscles, can include those around the eyes (known as crow's feet), vertical lines on the forehead, and a downturn of the eyebrows.
As we get older, our skin loses its elasticity, resulting in the formation of fine, static wrinkles. These wrinkles commonly appear around the corners of the mouth, along the cheeks, and on the neck, but can be further deepened by genetic predispositions, unhealthy eating habits, and smoking. Collagen, a protein that helps give our skin its structure, diminishes as we age, allowing our skin tissues to sag and worsen the appearance of these wrinkles.
Botox is the ideal solution for treating dynamic wrinkles. Botox is a muscle relaxant toxin, which works by temporarily paralyzing the target muscle to reduce or smooth lines and wrinkles caused by repetitious muscle movement. The effects of this treatment typically last for 3-5 months.
Treatments used to reduce the appearance of static wrinkles can involve dermal fillers such as Kiara Reju PDRN Skin Booster, Bellast Dermal Fillers, Huons High (HA Meso Inj - Skin Booster - Filler), VOM Dermal Fillers, RESTYLANE® Vital Light, Teosyal® Puresense Redensity 2 and Cellofill GP60 (which are featured in our Beauty Aesthetics Collection). These products are all suitable options for helping to soften the fine lines and wrinkles that can be seen in static wrinkles, giving you a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
Natural hyaluronic acid dermal fillers provide an immediate and long-lasting solution to filling in lines and wrinkles; results typically last from 6 to 12 months. Additionally, chemical peels and laser light therapy can be used to eliminate static wrinkles.
Static wrinkles are the easiest of the two types of wrinkles, dynamic wrinkles and static wrinkles, to prevent. It is essential to follow proper skin care routines such as utilizing a moisturizer, avoiding direct sunlight exposure, and following up with a good moisturizing routine in order to ensure that your skin remains soft and smooth, thereby reducing the appearance of static wrinkles. Following up with a sunscreen that has both UVA and UVB protection can also help prevent the appearance of wrinkles by protecting the skin from damage caused by excessive UV exposure. Additionally, eating a diet that is rich in antioxidants, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as drinking adequate amounts of water can also help keep your skin looking young and healthy.
Dynamic wrinkles can only be prevented by limiting muscle movement. It is difficult not to smile or frown, since they are two of the most basic and instinctive human expressions, but constant, repetitive movements of the facial muscles can lead to the formation of wrinkles. To avoid this, limiting smoking and avoiding frequent use of straws can help prevent lip wrinkles. However, this prevention-based approach may not be enough for some people, as dynamic wrinkles can be a result of aging or genetic predisposition. That's why people turn to cosmetic treatments as the fastest and most convenient way to reduce wrinkles. The above are the most common treatments done when you visit your Aesthetician such as fillers, Botox, thread lifts, and laser resurfacing. During your consultation, your doctor will assess your dynamic wrinkles and formulate a treatment plan designed specifically for you.
For individuals who prefer a DIY approach, some tools are available such as micro needling rollers and home-use laser devices, however, these should only be used by those who are experienced and understand the risks and potential results.
